So glad the weather was finally nice.
We enjoyed some outside time.

A fun day of scooter riding.

And crashing.
But Big Sis was there to help out.

Big Sis is hoping Lil' Sis learns volleyball through osmosis.

Then there was fun in a giant mud puddle at the park.

Then more crashing....only this time in the mud puddle.

Where'd All the Candy Go?

Where'd?
Is Where'd an actual contraction?
It stands for Where did.
I guess all the candy isn't gone yet, but it will be soon.
I for one am thankful that the Holiday season is over.
No more will I have to see the aisles and big displays of holiday candy staring me in the face as soon as I walk into a store.
By the time Easter rolls around I am so tired of candy.
Well, it's more like, I am so tired of being tempted into buying Hersey Kisses 2 for $4 and then keeping them in my desk at work at not sharing them with anyone.
So from now until they haul the Halloween candy out, which should be like July right, I will do my best to NOT eat chocolate.
I once went 11 months without chocolate.
I doubt I'll go that long...but I'll let you know when I cave.
Anyone else with me on the no chocolate pledge?
Happy Put the Chocolate Away Day.

Frosting for the Cause - My Guest Post

This is the post I sent to Frosting for the Cause. It posts on their site today! Yeah! I am making my donation to a local chapter of Relay for Life. Make sure to visit the site and sign up if you can!

Frosting for the Cause

I racked my brain trying to think of something awesome to post for Frosting for the Cause. I thought I would do something with royal icing and make a cool cookie. Then I was like, no you make awesome cupcakes…how about do a cupcake. After much thought I remember why I signed up to do this.

A year and a half ago I lost my Grandma to cancer. It started in her lungs and spread throughout her body. I will spare all the details about how awful it was for her and how awful it was as her family to see someone who had lived for almost 80 years to have to die in such a horrible way. Instead I will focus on the positive.
My Grandma was a church loving worry wart. There’s no other way to describe her. She loved her church and her faith and she loved to worry about her entire family.

When my oldest daughter was little she would call me every single morning to give me a weather update so I would be sure to dress my daughter appropriately. She would say,” Kaci it’s snowing really hard and the temperature is around 15 degrees. Make sure to put Big Sis’ heavy winter coat on her today.” Seriously, every single morning. Sometimes she would call me and say things like, “Kaci I just heard on the news that it is raining really hard and that the roads are slippery. Be careful when you cross the bridge because if you hit a puddle of standing water your car might slide and crash off the side of the bridge.” What a nice way for my Grandma to help me start the day, at 6:30 am. When I would hear my phone ring at this hour, I always answered, Hi Grandma, instead of Hello. I knew it was her. It was hard not to roll my eyes at her and say things like, “Really it’s snowing? I had no idea that white stuff falling from the sky was snow, let alone cold.” Who am I kidding…I would say things like that to her and she would just giggle and say “Oh Kaci, you know I worry.”

When I was in college I received care packages from my Grandparents that included things like stamps, change for laundry, band aids and other odds and ends that I hardly ever would buy for myself. They always included a batch of my favorite oatmeal cookies. There was something yummy and delicious about them. I would eat the entire batch in about two or three days and NOT share a single one. She always packaged them in an old oatmeal container with a sheet of wax paper covering the cookies under the lid. I don’t know why I remember that…but when I package things now, I always put a sheet of wax paper over them before I put the lid on.

After much thought I realized sharing the recipe of the oatmeal cookies would be perfect for this post. It’s nothing fancy and nothing complicated. Just a simple cookie that makes me think of my Grandma every time I make them.

Oatmeal Cookies
Ingredients

  • ¾ cup of shortening
  • ½ stick of margarine
  • 2 egss
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • ¾ cup of brown sugar
  • ½ cup of white sugar
  • 2 ½ cups of flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 2 ½ cups of oatmeal
  • ¾ cup of finely chopped walnuts

Directions
Heat your oven to 350 degrees.

Mix together shortening and margarine until blended and a little fluffy.
Add eggs and vanilla. Mix until just blended.

Add both the brown and white sugar. Mix until just blended.
Combine flour, baking soda and salt. I usually give it a little stir with a fork just to combine.
Turn your mixer on lowest setting and slowly add flour mixture. Mix until just blended.
With your mixer still on low slowly add oatmeal and then the walnuts.
Keeping your mixer on while you add the oatmeal and walnuts works best with a kitchen-aid mixer. I am thinking if you have a hand held that you don’t need to keep it on while you add it. Sometimes my kitchen aid doesn’t scrape the bottom of the bowl very good. Adding the oatmeal and nuts while its running seems to get everything mixed nicely.

I use my small Pampered Chef scoop to place the dough on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet. I think the scoop is about 2 tablespoons. I bake them for about 12 minutes or until golden.  When you remove them from the oven, immediately remove them from the cookie sheet or at least nudge each cookie so they don’t stick to the sheet. Also, the cookie won’t spread much. It holds its shape pretty good. This recipe makes about 60 cookies.

My hopeful Living room make-over

Mandi over at Vintage Revival is hosting a pretty awesome contest.
She will come to your home and re-invent the room of your choice.
Check out her blog and look at all her transformations.
It's insane what she can do with practically nothing.
So I am throwing my hat into the ring.
As soon as you see my pictures you will know why!

Our house was built in 1880.
The woodwork is the original!

This is my living room.
It's like a blank canvas of bland.
And I just noticed that one curtain is lower than the other.
The Hubs and I made the decision not to do anything with this room until our  kids were a little older and stopped doing things like coloring all over the walls and destroying the couch.  Our plan is to throw out the couch this summer and buy a new one. Hopefully!

Let's take a closer look as to why I should win.
This lamp is probably 20+ years old. Lovely right.
The wall art is courtesy of two small children
that I let live in my house.
You can tell I put a lot of thought and time into designing this corner.
These walls are screaming "Paint Me!"
This is a nice shot of the couch.
One end has seen better days.
If you are wondering what is on the coffee table.

That would be a lovely row of fairy stickers.
This wreath is from our wedding.
It use to be kind of pretty.
Before Lil' Sis became obsessed with the flowers and "picked" them all for me.
I have a hard time letting go.
I should have tossed this or reinvented this months ago.

So there you have it.
My embarassingly boring living room.
How can I not win?
This room is screaming for a make-over.
My youngest are three and four now.
They know better than to color on walls and jump on and off the couch.
Plus my mother-in-law is no longer watching our kids at our house during the day.
We love her dearly but she doesn't know how to say no.
Stickers on the furniture and coloring on walls are things that she "let" happen.
Did I just blame my mother-in-law?
Oops. I really love her and appreciate her.
Really I do.
I just wish she could say no and mean it.
Anyway, I feel like we can take that next step and regain our house back and make it look like two responsible adults live there.
Help me!

Princess Dessert Table Tags

I have included two versions of the dessert table tag.
One sheet includes tags that can be cut out and attached to the front of a bowl or hung from a ribbon.
The other sheet has the same tag, however you can cut it out and fold the tag in half and set it on the table right in front of a dish. I included a very light dotted line for guides.
I could only fit three of the folded tags on one page.
There was some extra space at the bottom of the page.
Everyone knows how I HATE to waste space.
So I went ahead and made three small oval shape tags.

If you are thinking what the heck do I do with these tags?
Well, you write things like Chocolate Cake, Veggie Tray, Mini-Sandwiches, Cake Balls, Chocolate Chip Cookies.
You get the idea.
It just pretties up your table.

Tomorrow I will post the Happy Birthday Banner.

If anyone uses these I would LOVE to see pictures.

Seriously though. These are cute too!
Napkin Rings and Cupcake Wrappers!
Print these out on cardstock.
Just tape together at the end.
You may have to trim them a little if they are too long.
